The tour comprises 3 full days of birding in various ecosystems. We will explore the lush Andean slopes that meet the prairies as well as the gallery, savanna and palm forests on various private Llano farms. Many hectares of wild vegetation and untouched forests attract a wide array of birds from the Andes, the Llanos and Amazonas.
Arrival & Welcome in the evening
We arrive to Villa Pepita Eco Lodge and receive an introduction to the house and garden with its many birds - puffbirds, woodpeckers, toucans and chachalacas. We enjoy a light dinner surrounded by the sounds of nature during dusk and soon after set out to follow their sounds with a torch. We look for potoos, pauraques, nighthawks, the double-striped thick-knee and tropical screech owl.
We explore the garden and surrounding native woodlands of Villa Pepita Eco Lodge on a 4km nature trail that leads through forest, pastures and past creeks, looking for capped herons, blue herons, caracaras, puffbirds and jacamars. In the afternoon we drive to a small mountain village for a hike in tropical forest, past streams, waterfalls and rockwalls. Here we keep our eyes peeled for various euphonia, thrushes, birds of prey and aracaris. Optional: we will also have swimming opportunities
Our second day takes us into the plains. We stalk birds in the savannas, palm and gallery forests and along little creeks, lagoons and wetlands. We'll spot hoatzins, savanna hawks, burrowing owls, various ibises, herons, kingfishers, the Amazonian motmot and more - and just enjoy the diverse and rich scenery of the Llanos.
Today we bird at a small nature reserve comprising a royal palm forest, a stretch of savanna and a moriche palm forest framing a lagoon. We are likely to spot hoatzins, chestnut-fronted macaws, caracaras, yellow-crowned parrots, redbellied macaws, tiger-herons, cuckoos, flycatchers and possibly horned screamers (season dependent).
